10.5.09- Day 139

Click here to go to christianaudio.com for a free download of Gary A. Haugen's book Just Courage: God's Great Expedition for the Restless Christian. I listened to it this evening. It takes about 3 hours. The book is really good and really hard. It addresses what God thinks about justice, what the Bible says about justice, why Christians (espeically American Christians) have stepped out of the "justice scene," and how his experience with IJM has changed his perspective on what it means to truly seek justice in the world. It affirms the feeling of meaninglessness and boredom that Christians feel today and gives us hope of a great adventure where we NEED God to pull through, where we are weak and he is strong, where God uses our hands, minds, and hearts to free people from violent injustice. This journey is not safe, but why do we try SO hard to be safe? Can we truly trust God to take care of us as we do his work?
This book felt like it was written straight to my heart. The heart that dreams of curing diseases, setting prostitutes free, rehabing children with disabilities, and building wells in desserts. The heart that dreams of what type of curtains to put in the kitchen, of reading at Barnes and Noble with a latte, of going on a vacation around the world, of saving lots of money so I won't have to worry. This book is written for the good-hearted Christian who is stuck inside the box of the American dream. It gives practical advice of things to do as a starting point in the fight against injustice.
